Benefits of Strength Training
Strength Training is a type of physical exercise that focuses on the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction. It involves increasing weight or repetitions to make your muscles resist and contract, which makes then stronger. While many of us might be intimidated by strength training, it is an essential part of being healthy.
Before your next workout, consider these benefits:
- Strength training lowers abdominal fat. When you begin strength training, you increase lean muscle which stimulates your metabolism. Also, many strength training exercises work your core, even if you are not aware of it.
- Strength training lowers your risk of injury. If your muscles are weak, more stress is placed on connecting tendons, which can result in injury.
- Strength training can boost your self-esteem. Over time, as you get better at something, you develop a sense of confidence and mastery. As you get stronger and increase the weights or repetitions you are doing, you will feel good about yourself and your accomplishment.
- Strength training allows you to be more in tune with your body. You may be sore when you begin strength training, but over time you will realize this signal means you are getting stronger. It also will tell you when your body might need some rest and recovery.
Remember, as with any exercise, warming up is essential! Before you begin a strength training session, be sure to walk or run for a few minutes and stretch. Also remember to start slow! Begin with 5-10 reps of a movement and when you feel comfortable, add weight or increase your repetitions.
