September – Prostate Cancer Awareness
Why is this Important?
Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among men of all races and Hispanic origin populations. All men are at risk for prostate cancer and the most common risk factor is age as the older a man gets, the greater his chance of getting prostate cancer. African-American men and those with a family history are also at increased risk of getting prostate cancer.
What Individuals can do:
- The US Preventative Services Task Force states that men age 55 to 69 benefit most from a prostate cancer screening test.
- Men should talk to their doctor to consider the risks and benefits of getting screened for prostate cancer.
- Women should encourage the men in their lives to talk to their doctors about getting screened for prostate cancer.
